The display of indigenous peoples’ tangible cultural heritage in museum settings like this has been an ongoing colonialist strategy for centuries.
Exhibit designs like this which prop up regalia on faceless brown mannequins and pin de-contextualized artifacts to the walls as if they are insect specimens rather than (often stolen) pieces which hold great significance to the peoples who made them are specifically designed to dehumanize and other the cultures which are put on display in this manner.
It’s no wonder that the practice of displaying various groups of colonized people in zoo exhibits continued far too long into the 20th century.
